Success Stories

Since starting FitSteps in Aug 2013, classes have grown considerably enabling me to leave my teaching job and focus on instructing. I feel incredibly lucky to earn a wage from doing something I love and am so passionate about.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY...

It’s funny how life turns out. Four and a half years ago, I was working in an office, caring for my elderly mum and really struggling to find time to exercise. A fitness instructor friend told me about FitSteps, and as there wasn’t a class local to me, I went along to an instructor training day in July 2014. I had no hopes or aspirations – a career in fitness was never part of my life plan, I just wanted to do something for me, and a day of dancing was very appealing at the time. But I passed the training, and after rehearsing like mad, plucked up the courage to start a class in a tiny village hall. A second class followed, then a third and a fourth, and now I’m teaching ten FitSteps classes a week at different levels, and the day job is history. It’s a little scary at times. I’m no spring chicken and I often doubt the wisdom of starting such a physically demanding career in my fifties, but most days it feels like the best thing I’ve ever done, and I know I am happier and healthier as a result. Thank you FitSteps.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY...

I had been an administrator all my working life and for the last 13 years, in a special needs school, a job I found very rewarding. However, Ballroom and Latin dance has been a passion for me since a child and for the past 11 years I have been competing with my husband. It was the need to earn some extra money to help with our dancing that started me on my amazing FitSteps journey. In November 2013, Ian Parker brought the FitSteps Instructor Training to Exeter and although I was very hesitant, it felt like a sign that I should be going for it. I passed and practised hard all over Christmas, starting my first class in January 2014. I had no previous fitness instructor background and had never taught a class before and no client base – I had to start from the beginning and build it up. It was terrifying initially, but I would look out at smiling faces and think I am doing something right! My classes slowly built and my soul felt taken over with teaching what I loved so much to others. I watched people’s fitness and confidence grow and my own confidence grew to believe that I could do this for my full time job. Eighteen months ago I took the big and difficult decision to leave my admin job, feeling that if I did not do this now, I may never get this chance again. People tell me I am made to do this as a job, but I would never have considered it without FitSteps. I am now about to celebrate four years of teaching FitSteps and it has been one of the best decisions of my life. There is no doubt that this is not an easy job and in my head I am probably never ‘off duty’, but I get up every morning excited to dance and stay fit with all my FitSteppers. FitSteps really has changed my life in so many ways.
